I posted on this topic in the Members Only section and it has been suggested I post it in every section for those who only look at one section of the Message Board. I don't want to repeat it all, so have a look there. I was proposing 2009 but there is interest in having it sooner, perhaps 2007. Please express your opinion, whatever it is, in the existing thread. People have had trouble accessing the Great M-100 Rally Fest Down Under thread in the Member's Only Section so I am shifting the topic to the General Discussions Section.
For those who are not members and for any member who has not read the proposed Rally route, I summarize it below. Initial proposed date was mid-late September, early October 2009 but many have suggested sooner. So same months 2007 or 2008 should work.
Overseas members come into Sydney. Qld and NSW local members and cars come to Sydney. Group including cars travel to Adelaide via Indian Pacific Motor Rail. WA, SA, and Vic members and cars meet up with the initial group in Adelaide. WA members can use Indian Pacific Motor Rail to get their cars to Adelaide.
Rally leaves Adelaide using one of the routes used in the Classic Adelaide Rally to enjoy the Adelaide Hills then via McLaren Vale, Victor Harbour, Tailum Bend, Mt Gambier, Warnammbool, Great Ocean Road, Geelong, Ferntree Gully, Eildon, Echuca or Albury, Bathurst and Sydney. Local groups may wish to return home or extend. Overseas members ditto. SA and WA members can use the Indian Pacific to get their cars home.
Extended rally either via the Hunter Valley and the New England Tableland or the Coast Highway to the Gold Coast and then to O'Reilly's on the Lamington Plateau. Then down to Brisbane where overseas guests can either fly further north to the Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays or Cairns before either returning to Sydney to fly home (Qantas flies directly to LA from Brisbane as well) or fly home via New Zealand.
The concept of the Rally is to show our overseas guests as much as is practical of Australia as passengers in our Australian M-100 cars and to meet each other and drive our cars over some of the most scenic parts of Australia, trying to make it as practical as possible for Australian members to get their cars from A to B.
The Rally can be repeated in a couple of years using a slightly different route if people wish. Art

Found a picture of the interior of the dining car on the Indian Pacific that I took. Ron has posted it on the thread in the members' only section for those interested to whet their appetites. Art |

Phil, It will be great to have you and Lynn. It will be very helpful to me to know how many North Americans (as well as locals) plan to come so I can book the Indian Pacific particularly, and other stopping venues as well. Art |

How does a member access the "members only" section? I can't see where it is??? Dumbme?
Count me in whatever year it turns out to suit most.
Looking forward to the chance to meet everyone, and hear the roar of as many M-100's as possible...
Cheers Norm |

Art, Teri and I will plan to come. Schedule this year is filling up fast, however; 2008 or 2009 will give us more time to plan. We really appreciate your efforts to put this together.

I can think of few places I want to visit more than Australia. A long vacation far away sounds dreamy right now. -CTH |

I'm listing those who have expressed interest in participating at this stage so that we have an idea on how we are going. If you are listed and have changed your mind, please reply. If you are not listed and are interested in being involved, please reply. Plan is for the Rally to be in September 2008 and to take about 10 days Sydney to Sydney with another 5-7 days for those doing the northern extension. USA members should consider another few days to enjoy Sydney and/or North Queensland and the Barrier Reef. Details are listed here and in the members only section of this message board.
Three Point Services here in Brisbane have offered assistance and will almost certainly be represented by 2 cars and possibly a service vehicle.

Thanks Anthony, I want to make up a group comprising one person from each major city. Will you represent Sydney? Chris Munday has already offered to coordinate in Perth and David Byrne in Melbourne. Daryl Maddern from Canberra and Adelaide has also offered. I need to start planning the route in detail, including where we should stay over night. It would be good to use one motel chain if possible. I want the driving time per day to be about half what you and I would regard as normal travelling in Australia so we can stop and look at things and not be pushed. I have looked at 2008 and the first Saturday in September is the 6th, so that is when I shall book the Indian-Pacific out of Sydney, presuming that they continue with the current schedule. They are currently only showing their timetable and prices to April 2008. Jack English has offered to coordinate any group bookings out of the USA. I'll start e.mailing all of you in the near future. I'll see if I can get Michael Davies or Randall Smith to give me advice about the Adelaide and South Australian sector. I have also e.mailed Ray Eastwood at BEA Motors in Adelaide, whom I know well, to see if he will be involved. Art |
