the blue lwb? She doesn't need paint. I presume you've dusted off all the CT soil by now. But other than some clay, definitely leave the paint be.

There's a photo in the latest Star magazine of somebody doing a full paint job to a 300d cabriolet while one of the rear quarters is getting replaced. That was overkill. The original paint and patina simply cannot be replaced. don't mess with something lovely.

Tom's pullman has the nicest original roof paint I've seen. Unfortunately the rest of the paint on the car is a bad re-spray. The person who painted it didn't even remove the side markers. There is also a large amount of bondo on the rear panel below the trunk lid. The door's show evidence of body work as well. There is also bondo on the hood

I wish it were original paint, it would look quite a bit better and it would be easier to polish/wax. I just spent 4 hours this morning working the paint.

When it was repainted, the painter stopped just past the ridge of the roof, you can see the mark.

This car does deserve a show paint job, its a rare bird.

I have a little time one my hands. We had to pull over and do the ice bag trick on the Pullman. I think I will keep the ac off for a while. Reporting from a sidewalk somewhere in washington st.

What the heck, try to stuff a MB 6.9 liter V8 in it. What a machine that would be..

Yes, the ice bag trick! First described by Dan Smith. Under conditions of heat, altitude and ethanol in the gas, the FI pump may develop an airlock burp preventing fuel from pumping. Happens when you stop the car and then try to restart it. Throw a bag of ice on the valley and the fuel condenses into liquid again. I remembered this on the way through Wyoming when we stopped and the car would not start. Worked almost immediately.

Vapour lock was a common problem in cars with mechanical fuel pumps in the engine compartment, pretty well totally resolved by electric pumps at the rear of the car. The 6.3 was an exception as Jack correctly points out. My 190SL was not drivable in stop start traffic in our climate until I had a small electric pump installed at the fuel tank. Prior to that, I used to buy a bag of crushed ice before every trip and hang it over the fuel filter, fuel line and fuel pump on the left side of the engine.

Hmm, the W126 cars have a fuel fitting that wraps an A/C line. It should be adaptable to a 6.3 easily. -CTH

Any updates? I drove some of that route two years ago when I collected my 600 from Mike Spicer in Portland. Wonderful trip. Ably assisted by my friend Luke. We decided at the last minute to turn left before hitting SF in rush-hour traffic. Ended up driving through winelands to Sacramento. Portland to Sacramento took a day and a half We ended up doing 3500 miles in 6 days...

Update

The trip was a success. We went from Portland to to San Fran over a two week period. The car ran great the first few days but blew the radiator while we were ready to head out of Portland. We put about 300 miles on the car and had a great time.

I chose to move on and rent a car to finish the trip. I now have a good excuse to go back and do it again.

I have a ton of pictures and will post a few of them over the next few days.

Of note:
If you are ever going on a road trip in a 6 door make sure your wife likes to drive. After an hour or two the drivers compartment starts to shrink. The best way to ride is to fold out the extra seats in the back about half way. It makes the back seat like a lazy boy recliner.

All the "divider" cars, either SWB or LWB must be very short of leg-room in the front.
As a driver, that would bother me. As a 6'3" driver it is not an option. Love them all, but pretty much only non-divider SWB for me.
Reclining "couch" in the back is useful for many purposes, including the co-driver (or wife) catching some zzzz's.

Eddie.

Likewise Eddie, but I understand that there were two LWB cars built with no divider and all seats faced forward. That I could handle.

Thanks to Paul for the photo.

Thanks Chris and Paul.
That would be the ultimate 600 for me. Up until now I had ruled out the LWB. Great for a family (of six) Road-trip.
