The original "Rote Sau" was sold to Michelin to test tires for a French jet fighter. Subsequently, what was left of the original car was junked and is believed to have been fed to the crusher. The reproduction in Affalterbach retains a stock 6.3 engine, air suspension (the racer had coil springs) and the K4 transmission. The engine does, however, have a beautiful set of headers custom made by, of course, AMG.

Posted - 04/28/2013 : 22:08:23 Hi,
My thought was always that the extended length would accomodate actual landing gear. When planes touch ground their wheels are accelerated from standstill to whatever their landing speed is and it is of interest how they hold up to that. Admittingly it can't be in the middle of the car (as the driveshaft belongs there), but either it only sits on side or a symmetrical setup. If you peek inside, there is a white disc (almost like the wheel housing from inside), but forward to where it should sit plus a bar (at angle) coming from the front,
cheers Konrad

Posted - 04/26/2013 : 00:11:06 I remember reading that the engine for this car had been bumped up to 428 DIN for Matra, and that it was stretched to hold gear. I'm pretty sure the article is on this website.

They didn't use it for racing. Supposedly, they needed a car that could accelerate very quickly on a runway, keeping up with a plane to do some tests on landing gear or something. So it was only going in straight line. Perhaps the length was added to increase stability, but that's just a guess. Or maybe they needed a lot of space for gear. It's all very mysterious. |

Posted - 04/24/2013 : 18:52:16 mmm yes, I would imagine those are her wheels, but where oh where is the rest? I mentioned some years ago that knowing the French car enthusiasts, that there maybe more stashed (hoarded) somewhere, just waiting to be rediscovered.

Which remark was that? . According to what I have heard, the first 300SEL with a 6.3 was a near new car that had been returned to the factory for evaluation and repair after an accident. The engine was placed into it to see how it would work, after hours . As it was Waxls Birthday recently it was mentioned on the MVC website, and a short history of some of his M100 powered projects was listed including the W113 .
