Posted - 12/12/2011 : 00:29:53 What started out as an effort to vintage race a 6.3 changed when the goods arrived.
http://tinyurl.com/8x99u6z
We violated our rule of buying a used car and we purchased it site unseen as the car just felt right. What showed up was a rust free, and I mean rust free, 6.3 running rich as anything with bad front airbags. Car was originally white but received a high quality respray in the current color combo twenty years ago, according to the PO. We promptly ordered air bags all around to get the oil pan off the ground and started sorting through the rich mixture. Also installed the oil cooler hoses, the three rubber hoses near the height valve, and the fuel hoses to the engine. Our mechanic is familiar with these cars and it seems "the rack" is likely stuck in the fuel injection pump and we are trying to figure out how to proceed from here. The rear fuel pump appears to be an inline K-jetronic fuel pump and we will either replace it with an original item or the K-jetronic setup sold by the Big-Toys guys http://www.big-toys.net/detail.cgi27.htm
Other than the cracked seats, we lucked out cosmetically. No dash cracks and the carpets should clean up nicely. Mechanic has pretty much talked us out of racing this one, and we look forward to driving the car once it is running properly and safe to drive. Forums like this sure do help...

Posted - 04/25/2012 : 14:39:20 Time for an update. With all new airbags and three rebuilt valves, the car will now sit without dropping. The following lines/hoses have been changed: oil cooler, transmission, fuel, suspension, and coolant. A new fuel pump was installed, along with new filters. New window switches fixed part of the window problem, and the new front regulators and felt fixed the rest. New tie rods and an alignment helped considerably and a can of Freeze12 had the A/C working about as well as can be expected. Have been daily driving the car over the past few days and this thing is chock full of personality. Still has some more minor mechanical issues and deferred maintenance but now we really like the car. The Nevada heat that saved the metalwork and body from rust punished the leather seats, so we are looking for replacement. Although the car runs well and is fast, still want to send out the pump and address all the coolant hoses and such while we are in there. Fun car.

Posted - 01/23/2012 : 18:18:26 Chris, What is wrong with the central locking? That small switch in the driver's door is pretty hardy and rarely causes problems. You can get a new one from Tom Hanson at the Classic Center if you want. It is not expensive as I recall. There are lots of other areas in the central locking that cause trouble after 40 years. Art |

Posted - 01/23/2012 : 17:22:53 you can get them from any pre W126 Mercedes . Even the last of the W123's have them.

Posted - 01/23/2012 : 08:22:43 Al,
If the fuel dumping just started the altitude compensator may be unscrewing or lose, mine came completely unscrewed while driving and the damn thing went to full rich = 2-3 MPG. If it is good and tight, your rack may be stuck, like Ron says, or your cold start valves are wide open, or your MFI needs completely rebuilt. Mike here is where it is:

Posted - 01/23/2012 : 03:52:34 Looks like a tin can on top of the fuel pump next to the steel tube with two rubber hoses ( thermo) . The red thing is the oil filler . Al,if it is overfueling, get it rebuilt. Simpler and quicker than trying to diagnose a problem if you cant see why it is happening. A sticky rack is my first thought on a car that hasn't seen any real use for a while.

OK my 6.3 is dumping fuel into the cylinders like it's going out of fashion. What does this thing look like Mike?
With best regards

Posted - 01/23/2012 : 00:49:40 Is there an Owner's Manual in the car? If so, it will have a wiring diagram in it. Yours is a late car, so it has the later setup with 2 fuses for the windows. If my memory is correct, they are fused left front and right rear on one fuse and vice versa on the other, but I may be wrong. Regardless, if the other 3 windows work, the problem is in the door affected or the switch and wiring for that door. If two don't work, it may be a common problem or two separate problems. Here is where the fuse box is in LHD cars. The fuse box between the two antipolution boxes with the labels on them and the front end of the hood hinge at the bottom of the picture in the middle.

I don't know which relay, if any, is involved in LHD cars, but if the other 2 windows work, it is hard to imagine it is a relay. The switches play up after 40 years, particularly with disuse. At least yours are all single switches.
Regarding the Bailey channel window felts, if they are otherwise OK, I would just glue them back. To replace the Bailey channel involves removing the window regulator and the glass and you are best to make a tool for installing the channel to install it properly.
Which valve are you referring to with regard to the central locking? Still don't have a first name?? Art |

Posted - 01/22/2012 : 22:26:17 Called Neil Dubey at Star and ordered front suspension valves. The back will stay up for about two weeks so I have that going for me, which is nice.
Pulled the door panel to diagnose the inop drivers' side windows. The switches were broken but there was power to the switch. Swapping L & R accomplished nothing. Both terminals to the motor were hot with a switch in place, so I need to track down a wiring diagram as I though there was a relay... Motor moves with 12V.
The felt slides for the window is coming out of the channel, so I will order new and install, along with a new valve for the central locking. Cleaned out the bottom of the door and was happy to find no rust.

Posted - 01/14/2012 : 18:00:54 Part number for the Schrader valve is 112 320 06 58. If you give Tom Hanson that number he should be able to supply some.
Sending a second set of valves for repair is a good idea, but I would buy the set from your friend and keep a spare set. It is common to find that someone has been at the valves before and the body or internals are damaged. Star do a total rebuild using totally new internals that Neil has had made. That is why they are more expensive than others. Being in Australia, I have not used Neil's services, but I have seen his setup for valve rebuilding and it is very impressive in the attention to detail.
Do you have a name? Art |

Posted - 01/14/2012 : 01:47:49 Chris Johnson, if you can find the part numbers for the Schrader valves I would appreciate it. Backup would be handy while the valves are sent our for repair.
Is Star the place to repair the valves?
A friend is parting a 300SEL 3.5, and offered his valves to me. I considered sending in that set so my car would spend less time on the ground, and returning my valves so he could sell the cores.
Occasionally under deceleration the car has a mild backfire, so I think my fuel injection issues still exist.

Posted - 01/04/2012 : 11:51:49 One or both of the front height control valves will allow this to happen. Even if only one is leaking the front end frequently goes down fairly evenly because of other stiction problems in the rear.
It is always a good idea to rebuild both front valves even if only one is obviously bad. Since you have already replaced the bags, it is safe to say that there is a 99.5% chance that the remaining problem (causing the sinking) is a front height control valve.
Chris Johnson If you aren't constantly impressed with your car, then it needs fixing. 100.012-12-000867

Posted - 01/04/2012 : 11:28:38 I had that groaning in my 1970 car...I did a few too many burn outs I would say...my LSD disc were very worn....I never did get that fixed though, it caused no issues 99% of the time. Mike |

Posted - 01/04/2012 : 11:18:33 Chris, I wish the sound from the back was a knocking sound as this is more of a groaning sound. Cannot think of what I would rub together to create this sound but will inspect and report.
For the front air bags I guess if the front end is evenly sinking and the back staying up the issue is with the height control valve?
