I finaly found some pictures from that particular 1978 Landaulet:

So, now we know, that that Landaulet has a Vin around 2500 or higher. Thank you for your hint and valuable info. It is a 4door presidential. |

Posted - 12/30/2012 : 13:09:11 I was at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours and that one is a different car. I haven't seen any pictures of it anywhere which I found odd. It is black, in kind of rough shape, and it did not have leather interior. Saddam's has a significant dent on the front right corner of the car near the front headlight and it is a 4 door model. The guy who works there said a doctor drove it out of Iraq and they bought it from him. |

Posted - 12/28/2012 : 21:49:08 As far as I can "reconstruct", that car you have seen, will be:
A 1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 Presidential Landaulet, this car was built for the government of Romania and its leader, Nicholae Ceausescu.
and should look as follows:

Posted - 12/28/2012 : 20:04:45 Yesterday I went on the tour of the basement of the Peterson automotive museum in Los Angeles and they had a very interesting 600 there. I don't believe that there are pictures of it on here buy I may have missed it. They own Saddam Hussein's 600 Presidential Landaulet. It wasn't in great condition but was still every interesting. They said they will never put it on display. |

Posted - 12/19/2012 : 16:47:45 Hi Paul, I think this car is produced before 1969. Look at the headrest in one pic and the hubcaps in the other pic. Greets Wilfried

Posted - 12/18/2012 : 23:12:16 Bowie is still a pretty major star, and these days he lives here in New York with his supermodel wife Iman.
I doubt he remembers any details of the 1976 Landaulet event.

Posted - 12/18/2012 : 18:56:26 I thought that the other people in the car looked African, rather than South American. It would make more sense if it was an African dictator who owned the car. Perhaps he got another one and registered this one in the UK for use when he was there (if he wasn't assassinated ). Maybe someone could ask David Bowie - at least he hasn't been assassinated and presumably has a website/blog/facebook or whatever. Art |

Posted - 12/18/2012 : 15:35:00 Oeps Mike,
Licenseplate in GB could be for sure 1974/1975, because afterwards licensed = imported from South America ... That was not my intention to doubt about .... Sorry, my "bad communication" ...
I was mentioning the productiontime / VIN ... |

The plate is definitely from 1974/75, and absolutely cannot have been issued earlier.
The South American dictator claim came from this source. Reading it again it says that the dictator was assassinated, which is not true for Forbes Burnham who lived until 1985.

Suriname was a dutch country, so no dictator available at that time ... Then it had to be guyana ?? |

An "N" plate would be from August 1974 to July 1975.
I found in a Bowie biography where it said the car used for the Victoria Station event had previously belonged to a "South American dictator." The problem with that is that the letter year suggests that the car was almost new at the time of the Bowie event (May 1976). Also, the car is right hand drive. The only South American countries that drive on the left are Suriname and Guyana. Perhaps the car belonged to Guyana's dictator Forbes Burnham, or the "South American dictator" claim from the book could be completely wrong.
It is possible that a later year plate was issued when the car was brought from South America to the UK. |
